The words of caution come after a Nottingham business was contacted by someone claiming to be a Nottinghamshire police officer on 8 June.
The bogus caller said he represented a police publication called Streetwise and tried to sell him advertising space in the magazine for hundreds of pounds.
It was only when the business owner researched the magazine online that he discovered the call had been a scam.
Luckily, he had not handed over any money and contacted police.
PC John Bridgewater, who is investigating the incident, said: “Nottinghamshire Police does not produce a Streetwise magazine and the caller was not an officer – he was a conman who wanted to get his hands on honest people’s cash..
