Due to a recent increase on spam and frauding emails coming through I wanted to notify of a fairly recent scam that has come to light which could potentially affect many businesses and owners credit ratings:
A business friend of ours was recently sent a new credit card through the post for business banking. While many of us receive these kind of promotional letters (sample credit cards attached etc) and throw them in the bin, we could be making a huge mistake..
Instead he called the online banking company directly to state that he had not ordered this account and please remove from the mailing list and was surprised to find that it had been approved and processed under his personal and business name and had been a victim of identity threat.
It seems that rouges are finding business contact information from Companies House and with this using the information to open fake business accounts which immediately receive an automated overdraft.
Although authorities are aware of this happening, its always wise for us as businesses to be aware on how we can protect ourselves and our businesses.
The moral of this news
If in doubt, check with the company!
The Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce (DNCC) has also picked up on this in the recent issue of In Business Magazine, so if you are a member please check with them for more information.
